The Government of India recognizes Sandalwood (Santalum album) as a high-value agro-forestry asset capable of transforming rural income, strengthening exports, and restoring India’s global leadership in sandalwood production.
Under the guidance of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, sandalwood cultivation has been liberalized—allowing private farmers to legally grow, harvest, and market sandalwood trees across eligible states.
In the Union Budget 2026–27, special emphasis was placed on promoting high-value agriculture and agro-forestry crops, encouraging diversification beyond traditional farming models.

India’s Cultural Heritage – The Importance of Sandalwood Message from the Hon’ble Minister of Finance & Corporate Affairs on Sandalwood Cultivation Sandalwood holds a distinguished place in India’s rich socio-cultural heritage.
Recognized for its spiritual, traditional, and economic value, sandalwood cultivation is now gaining renewed focus under the guidance of the Central Government. The Government of India, in coordination with State Governments, is actively promoting scientific sandalwood cultivation, sustainable farming practices, and value-added post-harvest processing to strengthen India’s sandalwood agriculture sector.
Despite the immense benefits of sandalwood grown in states like Kerala and Karnataka, its economic and cultural potential has not been fully highlighted in the past. Under the direction of Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi, efforts are being made to create awareness about the importance of sandalwood in India’s cultural and economic growth.
Sandalwood is sacred in our rituals, present in our homes, and cherished in our traditions. Therefore, promoting sandalwood cultivation is not only an economic opportunity but also a shared responsibility for preserving India’s heritage.

चंदन खेती पर केंद्र सरकार का दृष्टिकोण – वित्त एवं कॉर्पोरेट कार्य मंत्री का संदेश चंदन भारत की सामाजिक और सांस्कृतिक विरासत का एक महत्वपूर्ण हिस्सा है। आध्यात्मिक, पारंपरिक और आर्थिक दृष्टि से मूल्यवान चंदन खेती को अब केंद्र सरकार विशेष महत्व दे रही है।
केंद्र सरकार, राज्य सरकारों के सहयोग से वैज्ञानिक चंदन खेती, सतत कृषि पद्धतियों और फसल कटाई के बाद मूल्य संवर्धन प्रक्रियाओं को बढ़ावा दे रही है, ताकि भारत के चंदन कृषि क्षेत्र को सशक्त बनाया जा सके। केरल और कर्नाटक में उगाए जाने वाले चंदन के लाभों को पहले व्यापक रूप से उजागर नहीं किया गया। माननीय प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी के मार्गदर्शन में चंदन के सांस्कृतिक और आर्थिक महत्व के प्रति जागरूकता बढ़ाने के प्रयास किए जा रहे हैं।
चंदन हमारे पूजा-पाठ में उपयोग होता है, हमारे घरों में पवित्रता का प्रतीक है और हमारी परंपराओं में शुभ माना जाता है। इसलिए, आने वाले समय में चंदन खेती को बढ़ावा देना हम सबकी जिम्मेदारी है।
